Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician

Summary of the Position: The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician helps design, implement and operate the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS Technician primary focus is on supporting GIS Data and mapping projects City-wide and will act as support to other city department on GIS related projects.

General Overview of Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the collection, input and updating of geospatial data, verifying the accuracy and completeness of data entered and the organization.
  • Responsible for maintaining the City’s GIS database and related files. Duties include entering, updating and maintaining geographic and attribute files, records, documents.
  • Responsible for maintaining user information in the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) including entering and removing users, editing database user privileges.
  • Responsible for installing, configuring, and updating City wide GIS software and tools.
  • Creates maps and visualizations using the City’s GIS software based on project specifications. Ensure maps are aesthetically pleasing, informative, standardized and easy to understand.
  • Maintains and continuously updates GIS processes and workflows including preparing documentation and reports for GIS related projects.
  • Works with the Asset Management Coordinator in the integration and ongoing maintenance of the City’s comprehensive asset/work management systems with the GIS software.
  • Provides data and reports for city wide GIS programs including but not limited to data related to the strategic planning, performance measures, fixed assets, monthly, quarterly, and annual activity reports.
  • Acts as City wide support contact for other city departments on GIS related programs, data and mapping.
  • Works with the Asset management Coordinator in customization of applications to increase productivity, generate reports, and improve maps and support business processes.

Minimum Requirements: Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science or related field and three (3) years of experience using GIS software and tools. Preferred qualifications: Certification in Geographic Information systems and working knowledge of municipal infrastructure and assets, familiarity with web mapping technologies including ArcGIS. Experience in municipality information technology, preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
