Position Summary

The Communications Intern will reinvigorate our full CTNY program social media strategy and help drive social media and email engagement for our six nature and education Centers across Connecticut and New York.

You should be a superstar writer and a creative thinker, able to write a blog post about migration and then transform the narrative into a successful Instagram story. You will also help create the templates and norms which future interns will build upon (content calendars, edited photo libraries, tracking of successful posts to recycle, etc.). You will report to the Communications Associate.

Projected Start Date and Schedule
The internship would ideally begin as early as May and end in late August/early September. We are flexible for those in college who may require a different start/end date. If you’re interning for academic credit, we can work with you on a schedule that fits your school program requirements.

Two different schedules are possible:
1) Intern commits to three full workdays/week, 7 hours per day for a total of 21 hours per week.
2) Intern spaces out 21 hours/week however works for them. Working hours must take place sometime Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm.

We are very flexible on schedule because a large percentage of your work will not be time-sensitive.


Compensation:


$20.00 / hour


Essential Functions
  • In coordination with the Communications Associate and Senior Manager, develop and implement a social media strategy that will broaden Audubon’s visibility and reach, and serve as a set of guidelines for future interns to build upon.

  • Engage Audubon members across NY and CT on local, state, and national conservation issues, focusing on issues related to coastal policies, forest stewardship, native plants, climate change and renewable energy, environmental program funding, etc.

  • Help test new ways for Audubon to be more equitable and inclusive in our messaging and in how we put our messages out into the world.

  • Create, edit, and post social media content (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram), using tools like Buffer, Hootesuite, Canva. Content includes blog posts, photos, and video.

  • Develop a social media content calendar alongside Communications Associate.

  • Engage with followers who write in with questions about birds or programs.

  • Research, develop, and fact check stories for Audubon websites that expands our reach and deepens our audience’s affinity for our work.

  • Write and design (per our templates) monthly event emails for Centers (and state programs on an as-needed basis).

  • As-needed, create resources which help staff improve their ability to communicate with audiences.

  • Report monthly on outcomes of engagement. Evaluate results and make recommendations to enhance strategy.

  • Carry out other special assignments determined by the Communications Associate.


  • Qualifications and Experience
  • The internship is well suited for college juniors, college seniors, and graduate students studying writing, marketing/communications, or journalism. We are also happy to consider any candidates looking for relevant experience.

  • Must have your own laptop or access to a computer.

  • Interest in birds, nature, and/or wildlife.

  • Desire to educate others about conservation and the natural world.

  • Highly organized (there is an elaborate Excel spreadsheet in your future!)

  • High degree of personal initiative, flexibility, and creativity.
