Position: Associate Director, Finance & Accounting

Employer: Vitamin Angel Alliance, Inc. (VA)

Division: Corporate Services

Location: Flexible. This person can work remotely from anywhere in the continental US or work from our corporate headquarters in Goleta, CA or our office in Chicago, IL, or any combination thereof.

Salary range: 120,000 – 140,000 annually

Role or Purpose of Position

Vitamin Angels is seeking an experienced Associate Director for the Finance & Accounting department. Vitamin Angels is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates in all 50 states and in 65 countries around the world.

This role within the Corporate Services team will report to the Senior Director of Finance & Accounting. This person will be experienced in: managing the monthly accounting cycle, timely preparation of the monthly financial reporting package including variance analysis, managing the accounting and reporting of the international entities, budgeting and forecasting.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversight and management of the monthly accounting cycle including, but not limited to: reconciling balance sheet accounts and booking related entries, reviewing bank reconciliations prepared by Staff Accountant, reviewing journal entries, and reconciling donations between the general ledger and SalesForce.
  • Supervision and mentoring of accounting staff.
  • Preparation of monthly reporting workbook for Senior Director of Finance & Accounting and CFO, including variance analysis
  • Day-to-day oversight and management of foreign entities' accounting and financial and tax reporting requirements including coordination with in-country accountants
  • Develop and improve accounting processes as needed
  • Supporting the Senior Director of Finance and Accounting in the budgeting and forecasting process as needed
  • Management of the donations process, including proper revenue recognition and monitoring of outstanding AR working closely with the Staff Accountant and Development team
  • Monthly reconciliation of investment accounts
  • Assist in annual financial statement audits, donor audits, and tax returns, including preparation of workpapers and documentation for the US and affiliated international entities.
  • Special projects and other related duties, as assigned

Within the bounds of VA's mission, values and policies, and sound professional practices, the Associate Director, Finance & Accounting has the discretion to use independent judgment to make decisions of significant consequence that affect VA clients, partners, and employees.

Organizational Relationships

VA operates under a collaborative, matrix management model. The Senior Accountant establishes their own daily work priorities and ensures that all responsibilities are conducted consistent with accepted best practices, sound professional judgment and within established schedule and budget.

 

Reports to: Senior Director of Finance & Accounting

Supervises: Staff Accountant

Primary working relationships: Staff Accountant, Accounting Manager, Senior Director of Finance & Accounting, International Compliance Manager, CFO

Travel required: Minimal

 

Qualifications and Skills (Required and Preferred)

Required:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in a similar role
  • B.Sc. degree in a relevant discipline (accounting, finance, management) from an accredited university or relevant equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated analytical/research skills, and proven adeptness at detailed work and ability to interpret financial data and trends
  • Strong/Advanced Excel skills including v-lookups and pivot tables

  • Proven experience managing competing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change and assist with the creation of controls and processes that enhance management decision making
  • Strong leadership as well as verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively across the organizational and functional boundaries
  • Ability to remain seated for extended periods of time, including but not limited to general job assignments perform at a desk.
  • Ability to manage stress, including but not limited to stress resulting from large crowds, open spaces, shared office space, and daily activities.

Preferred (not required):

  • CPA license
  • 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Public accounting experience
  • Nonprofit experience
  • Experience accounting and reporting in foreign countries
  • Experience with Sage Intacct (or similar cloud-based accounting ERP) and/or multi-state payroll software
