Summary:
The Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic I repairs, fabricates, modifies, and installs sheet metal parts, items, and assemblies. Sheet metal mechanic work requires knowledge of the physical properties and working characteristics of sheet metal, knowledge of tools and equipment required in the sheet metal trade, and knowledge of shop mathematics and principles.
Essential Job Functions:
- Use shop mathematics to determine curves, angles, and pitch.
- Plan and make pattern and template layouts.
- Work with various kinds of metal, including magnesium, honeycomb material, galvanized and black iron, aluminum and aluminum alloys, stainless steel, copper and brass sheets, lead alloys, and bronze.
- Attach brackets, hinges, or clips to secure or support components or subassemblies, using bolts, screws, rivets, chemical bonding, or welding.
- Read and interpret blueprints, illustrations, and specifications to determine layouts, sequences of operations, or identities and relationships of parts.
- Align, fit, assemble, connect, or install system components, using jigs, fixtures, measuring instruments, hand tools, or power tools.
- Assemble, install, and connect parts, fittings, and assemblies on aircraft, using layout tools, hand tools, power tools, and fasteners such as bolts, screws, rivets, and clamps.
- Cut, trim, file, bend, and smooth parts, and verify sizes and fitting tolerances in order to ensure proper fit and clearance of parts.
- Inspect or test installed units, parts, systems, or assemblies for fit, alignment, performance, defects, or compliance with standards, using measuring instruments or test equipment.
- Adjust, repair, rework, or replace parts and assemblies to eliminate malfunctions and to ensure proper operation.
- Position and align subassemblies in jigs or fixtures, using measuring instruments and following blueprint lines and index points.
- Layout and mark reference points and locations for installation of parts or components, using jigs, templates, or measuring and marking instruments.
- Assemble prefabricated parts to form subassemblies.
- Fit and fasten sheet metal coverings to surface areas or other sections of aircraft prior to welding or riveting.
- Clean, oil, or coat system components as necessary before assembly or attachment.
- Join structural assemblies, such as wings, tails, or fuselage. Align and fit structural assemblies manually, or signal crane operators to position assemblies for joining.
- Fabricate parts needed for assembly or installation, using shop machinery or equipment.
- Determine the nature and extent of repairs to be made using applicable Technical Manuals {TMs) as guidelines.
- Repair cracks in aircraft skin.
- Fabricate and fits patches to damaged areas as necessary to retain or restore original strength.
- Install regular, heat-treated, high shear, and blind type aircraft rivets and fasteners by using pneumatic riveters, bucking bars and other special tools.
- Perform metal to metal bonding where delamination of surfaces or core material occurs.
- Inspect for corrosion conditions which are eliminated by chemical treatment or material replacement.
- Inspect, repair, fabricate and replace honeycomb and fiberglass structural assemblies.
- Must be capable of safely handling government furnished equipment and materials.
- Available for short term travel to complete work off site.
- Must be available to work a standard weekly schedule with overtime as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires good comprehension in reading, interpreting engineering drawings, repair manuals and related technical data and thorough knowledge of and skill in the use of tools and techniques of rework and repair of sheet metal fabricated structures.
- Requires a good knowledge of shop mathematics, ability to lay out, form, shape, and/or fit and assemble multi-contoured parts using such precision instruments as micrometers, calipers, dividers, dial indicators, levels, protractors, clinometers, gages and rulers, and such metal working tools as hand and powered sheers, brakes, rolls, mallets, forming blocks, hand saws, grinders, sanders, files, a wide variety of pneumatic drills, rivet guns, and blind fastener tools.
- Requires a good knowledge of various machinery to include band saws, hydraulic and manual press brakes, hydraulic and manual shears, shrink/stress press, turret punch, etc.
- Requires a good knowledge of various hand tools to include pneumatic rivet guns, pneumatic/electric drills, hand shears, countersinks, calipers, micrometers, Cleo clamps, cherry max guns, hi-lock tools, clamps, drills, scales, etc.
- Requires good knowledge of various aluminum, steel, and stainless-steel alloys and heat-treating properties for use on aircraft structures.
- Requires a good knowledge of aircraft structural hardware (including applications and techniques of preparation and installation) such as solid, tubular, and explosive rivets, cherry max rivets, standard and special aircraft bolts, nuts, and washers, anchor nuts, hi locks, dzus fasteners, screws, airlock and fasteners, and variety of other structural fasteners.
- Requires good knowledge of and the ability to detect various types of corrosion such as surface corrosion, galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion, pitting corrosion, and fretting corrosion.
- Requires a good knowledge of corrosion treatment, repair methods and proper tools used in corrosion removal.
- Requires a good working knowledge and probable effects of various loads and stresses applied to structures such as compression, tensile and shear, and the ability to recognize an overloaded or over stressed condition.
- The sheet metal mechanic must rely on advance trade knowledge and the ability to improvise trade techniques.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Three (3) years' experience with an aircraft sheet metal mechanic background in manufacturing/repair/installations on commercial or military aircraft required.
