Job Summary

This position supports the daily administrative operation of the Psychology and Child Development Department and its programs. Under the general direction of department chair, the ASC I works both independently and in collaboration with faculty and other staff members to support the department. Given the three-year department chair rotation, this individual provides continuity of operation and practice with respect to the department, college and university policies. The size and variety of programs and activities create significant complexity and require extensive knowledge of and experience in administration, public and student relations, autonomy and decision making. The ASC I position serves as a point of contact for students, faculty, staff and the general public. This person also provides lead support for the graduate program. Given the multiple roles and responsibilities, it is critical that this individual have the ability to work independently under general supervision to learn department, college, university and CSU politics and procedures.

Note: This position is 32 hours per week (0.8FTE) and paid under the 11/12 pay plan, where salary for 11 months is distributed over 12 months with JULY off (with pay, benefits, and vacation/sick leave accrual continuing through months off).

Department Summary

The Psychology and Child Development Department (PSY/CD) is a major academic unit in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). The department offers a B.S. in Psychology, a B.S. in Child Development, an M.S. in Psychology, and minors in Psychology, Child Development, and Gerontology, and offers courses to satisfy General Education and Breadth requirements open to all Cal Poly students. The department has the largest number of majors in the college with approximately 650 undergraduate majors. In addition, there are approximately 350 minors and 30 MS students.

The department runs two programs that serve our campus and local community: The preschool Learning Lab (part of the Child Development major) and the San Luis Obispo Counseling Service at Cal Poly (part of its M.S. in Psychology program). It also oversees a department computer lab. The department is currently composed of a department chair (on a 3-year rotation, with 3-year renewable terms ), 20 full-time faculty, 3 FERPS (Faculty Early Retirement Program), 25-28 part-time lecturers, 3 staff, and 10-20 paid student assistants who provide program support in psychology, with the M.S. program counseling clinic, and in the Child Development (CD) Preschool Learning Lab. The department also supports the staffing (1 Director, 2 Teachers) for the CD Preschool Learning Lab.

Key Qualifications
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to establish multiple priorities and to coordinate and plan for overlapping assignments and projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy.
  • Ability to compile, investigate, interpret, and evaluate data from many sources; ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Knowledge and understanding of or the ability to quickly learn complex University and Departmental policies and procedures, especially as they relate to registration and scheduling.
  • Ability to quickly learn university infrastructure, policies, and procedures to provide or perform a variety of functions and services in support of the program goals.
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in standard office procedures and practices.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or its equivalent. Four years of general office support or technical experience. (Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of college education for 6 months of experience).

Salary and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $27,408 - $35,208 per year based on 32 hours per week (0.8FTE), 11/12 work schedule

Classification Range: $33,708 - $56,628 per year based on 40 hours per week (1.0FTE), 11/12 work schedule
