This position serves as the lead instructor for students in the classroom at assigned school/building; provides kindergarten readiness and instruction using English and a world language; assists non-native English speakers/students with English acquisition; provides support to enhance student academic achievement through a safe learning environment; encourages parental involvement for students at assigned school/building; serves as a resource and advocates for bilingual families, school staff and the community.

1. Instructs students with the curriculum and lesson plans for pre-school instructional program; uses bilingual strategies and curriculum; assists in administering tests; maintains student records for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts and measuring academic and social growth.
2. Supervises student behavior in the classroom; supervises students in the lunchroom, during recess, when students are entering or leaving the building, between classes or boarding buses for the purpose of providing a safe learning environment conducive to academic achievement.
3. Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments, homework assignments, make-up work, translating instructions and materials, adapting lessons to promote cultural and world language understanding for the purpose of introducing and/or reinforcing new vocabulary and/or learning concepts.
4. Provides verbal and written communications bilingually to program students and their families; shares with students and families the District program's guidelines and policies; enriches the students' and families' school experiences by serving as liaison for families and community in workshops and cultural events for the purpose of enriching the family experience with the District and community.
5. Maintains classroom materials and supplies, record keeping and clerical functions for the purpose of ensuring an effectively functioning classroom.
6. Serves as an interpreter/translator for events and activities involving school students and their families for the purpose of advocating for students and parents.


1. Maintains and updates knowledge and skills necessary for success in the position by participating in professional development activities and training as required, and/or as assigned; attends workshops and training sessions relating to program goals, guidelines, and requirements.
2. Participates as a member of various school committees as directed by assigned administrator.
3. Performs related duties as assigned, on a temporary basis.
4. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
Associate's degree in the field of early childhood education or related field including 30 quarter credits in early childhood education; coursework in languages; three years' experience of successful, relevant, documented work experience in a preschool, childcare, or kindergarten setting, or other closely related field; bilingual in English and a World Language, required; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work and that meets federal and state requirements.

Allowable Substitution
Equivalent combination of education and experience will be evaluated by the Human Resources department for comparability.

Required Licenses/Special Requirements
Valid Washington State driver's license and access to personal transportation.
First Aid, CPR certificate, and Food Handler's card, or required to obtain within the first three months of employment, with required ongoing maintenance.
Restraint training or District directed alternative, required.
Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.

Working Conditions
Confined to work area; exposed to body fluids and infectious disease; required to work with, and, if appropriate, defuse, difficult and sensitive situations; may be required to walk, sit, squat, crawl, kneel, crouch, twist, bend, stoop, climb, reach and lift to attend to the physical needs of the students; may be required to lift and carry up to 25 pounds individually and team-lift and carry up to 50 pounds; may be required to travel to other District sites; may require flexible work hours to match needs of school(s)/building(s)/site(s).
