ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Emergency Communications Department serves as the communications and technological link between Fire, Police, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and mental health support resources for those who live, work, and visit the city.

ABOUT THE ROLE: The Enterprise and Application Specialist is part of the Public Safety Information Technology (PSIT) Team that supports Police, Fire and Emergency Communications Departments. The department provides communication and information technology services needed to preserve life, conserve property, and build long term relationships with the public. We are proud to support public safety and community initiatives to enhance services to those who request them.

Reporting to the Application & Database Manager, the Enterprise Application Specialist will support the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Police and Fire Records Management Systems (RMS) and other applications used by Public Safety. This position will also offer opportunity to expand knowledge into other enterprise applications used by the City of Cambridge. The City of Cambridge Public Safety Information Technology Department has a collaborative team culture offering potential to work on varied and challenging technical projects. The Enterprise Application Specialist researches and analyzes application issues, recommends the best course of action for resolving issues, and carries out associated tasks that support management decisions, the City’s mission, and the best interest of end-users. The person chosen for this role will be involved in installing and configuring applications based on the needs of users. They also support the databases used by these applications. We are looking for technical experience and specialization in doing this hands-on work while at the same time being flexible to work on different applications, not just one.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide day-to-day support including analysis, debugging and maintenance for large scale enterprise applications utilized by Public Safety.
  • Provide analysis, design, testing, debugging, maintenance, and documentation for complex enterprise applications. This requires in-depth technical expertise across multiple platforms, operating systems, and tools, and of the entire enterprise landscape.
  • Understanding of various disciplines and technologies, such as web, directory services, directory synchronization, security, databases, networking, infrastructure, and application development is key.
  • Oversee projects and interact with other departments to ensure on time completion.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to co-workers and others as a high value technical resource.
  • Document processes and procedures of implemented changes.
  • In-depth understanding of the configuration and usage of complex enterprise applications.
  • Ensure applications and systems are maintained, secure and current.
  • Ensure applications are proactively monitored to alert if issues arise
  • Develop, establish, and maintain positive and influential relationships with managers, peers, and business unit customers.
  • May perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Application support experience such as: Web applications, SharePoint, VBA, Power BI, HTML, JavaScript, MS SQL and Informix
  • Broad knowledge of application deployment architecture and infrastructure components
  • Experience in application architecture, design, and development a plus
  • Troubleshooting experience resolving varied application related problems (error messages, connectivity, delayed response times, etc.)
  • Familiar with software principles of DRY, KISS, and YAGNI
  • Equally proficient in building/maintaining applications via ADE or simple text editors
  • Experience with monitoring tools is a plus.
  • Excellent problem solving/analytical skills and knowledge of analytical tools.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and negotiations skills.
  • Ability to effectively interface with technical and non-technical staff at all organizational levels.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is conducted primarily in an office environment with fluorescent lighting, air conditioning, computers, and other standard office equipment, but also involves meetings in other offices or facilities. Position may be eligible for hybrid work under the City’s Telework Policy, depending on operational needs.
